A whisper from Minnesota…

The first of an occasional series introducing the medical devices, life sciences and healthcare scene in Minnesota.

Responding to coronavirus - calling for expertise

Minnesota is globally competitive in medical devices and healthcare, with a vibrant ecosystem including companies like Medtronic, Smiths Medical, United Health, Ecolab, 3M and many others, plus the Mayo Clinic. It has deep medical expertise and is a leading player in the rapid development of solutions to the Coronavirus epidemic reaching out for more knowledge from around the world.

Corralling and connecting expertise

Like everywhere else, lockdown is a theoretical concept that has suddenly become a daily reality. Minnesota is no different.

In response, the state is engaging its massive firepower in the medical devices and healthcare sector to support businesses and communities to develop local, national and global solutions to coronavirus.

The rapid coordination of so many disparate capabilities in this emergency is a crucial requirement for effectiveness.

One of the key links in bringing together multinationals, mid and small-sized companies, agencies, researchers, distributors and other organisations is Medical Alley’s Resource Connect - a new public service that presents a platform to match need with supply.

Resource Connect is now available to ABHI members and is accessed through a simple online form.

Disseminating expertise

Most of the world is not involved in the healthcare sector. The wider business community has obligations in a new medical arena in which it has little knowledge.

Business leaders have responsibilities for their staff and other stakeholders. Today, they’re faced with decisions involving huge medical risk and huge business risk that have to be made quickly in the face of a stream of information, not all of it reliable.

To answer this dilemma the Destination Medical Center (DMC), the $5.6bn investment adjacent to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN, is undertaking a series of webinars partnering with leading experts to inform business leaders about the medical advice, the risks and the decision making criteria that have to be taken into account in order to steer through this crisis. Every week, starting 16th April, DMC will host weekly webinars to support the business community.

Topics include:

  • Construction Safety in a COVID-19 Environment with representatives from the Mayo, public health and the construction sector on the panel on 16th April.  (Post-event webinar at this link.)
  • The Business Pivot - Navigating a New Path in a New Economy which looks at surviving and thriving in the current climate.
  • More tbc.

All are supported by best-in-class health expertise matched with commercial savvy to provide the latest knowledge.

Note: Minnesota timezone is 6 hours behind so the webinar’s US kick-off time of 12 noon is 6pm in the UK.
